Review for Kona Kai Resort, San Diego Very disappointed with our stay and the post-stay support. We booked this property through Chase as a premium hotel booking, which included eligibility for early check-in, a $100 on-property credit, and a welcome amenity. To use the early check-in benefit, I called the day before our arrival to confirm we could check in between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. I was told to call again closer to check-in time. The next day, I called twice and was told early check-in was not available. After landing at 10 a.m. and spending time driving around the city with cranky kids, we arrived at the property at 2 p.m. to request early check-in again. We were told the rooms still weren’t ready, but that we would be prioritized and receive a call once a room was available. That 2 p.m. promise turned into 3 p.m., then 5 p.m., then 6 p.m.—with no call in between. After spending time at the beach, we finally returned at 6 p.m. and were given our keys. We had a $100 credit from Chase to use during our two-day stay. However, the spa was already closed by 6 p.m. on the day of arrival. We tried to find ways to use the credit, but the restaurant and bar were also closed by 6 p.m. T

I recently stayed at the Kona Kai Resort in San Diego and had an absolutely wonderful experience, thanks in large part to Rudy at the front desk. From the moment I arrived, Rudy greeted me with genuine warmth and a smile that made me feel welcome right away. He handled my check-in efficiently and took the time to answer all my questions about the resort and the surrounding area. His knowledge of local restaurants and attractions was incredibly helpful, and you could tell he truly cared about making sure my stay got off to a great start. Throughout my visit, Rudy went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. Whenever I stopped by the front office, he was attentive, professional, and always happy to help with whatever I needed. It’s rare to encounter someone who combines such a high level of service with a warm, personable attitude, and Rudy did exactly that. He’s a true asset to the Kona Kai team, and he’s a big reason I’ll be recommending this resort to friends and family. Thank you, Rudy, for making my stay so memorable!

The service in this place is great and the people are fantastic and highly responsive. The views are pretty and some of the amenities are lovely. The gym is well stocked and has newer equipment. However, I rated it 4 stars because I felt it was just okay. I would have rated it 3.5 but I dont have the option. The spa wasn't open most of our time there, the bathtub was draining so slowly. I called twice to get it fix but it quickly became a slow drain. The sliding bathroom door nevee stayed open on it own, we needed to put a towel down to keep it closed. The AC was now blowing consistently cool air even out of eco mode at 65 degree F. I checked the filter and it looked like it hasn't been cleaned in a very long time. The food for the buffet was just mediocre as well. For the resort area and cost of the place, I anticipated more. The beds were comfortable though and they provided many pillows. If these all don't bother you then the views, and the amenities may be worth it.

I’m leaving a poor review due to a combination of frustrating instances during our stay. To be fair, I did appreciate the early check-in, and it was obvious they were short-staffed. I waited my turn patiently, but midway through helping me, the service manager took a phone call. Instead of putting them on hold, she engaged with a guest who was upset about not being able to extend their suite stay. While she was professional, it made me feel second-class and less important. I wouldn't have even left a review about that if it weren’t for what happened next. At the end of check-out, she handed me a Big Bay Boom pass and told me it was highly recommended not to leave Shelter Island tomorrow for the 4th of July. She warned that if I did leave, I wouldn't be permitted back onto the island until around midnight. Nowhere on their website did it state this. The entire reason I booked a room down here was to avoid driving home after a boat ride during the fireworks. Now, it’ll take me longer to get back to my hotel room than it would to just drive all the way home. The AC in our room is also awful. It’s comparable to one of those old Motel 6 wall units and makes the room feel humid instead o
