I’ve been coming to the USF Recreation & Wellness Center throughout my entire time at USF, and overall it has been a great gym experience. The facility is very spacious, has a strong variety of equipment, and pretty much every machine or training area you need for a solid workout. The environment is generally good, and I’ve made a lot of great friends here over the years, there’s definitely a strong fitness community that makes the gym enjoyable to come to. That said, one of the biggest downsides has consistently been equipment upkeep. There always seem to be random machines, benches, or accessories broken here and there, and sometimes water filling stations are out of service as well. For a gym of this size and quality, maintenance could definitely be more consistent. Some of the gym policies also feel a little overly strict/“Planet Fitness-ish” at times when the atmosphere could benefit from being a bit more relaxed and practical for serious lifters. Despite those issues, this is still a very solid university gym and one of the better campus rec centers I’ve seen. It has served me well during my time at USF, and I’ll genuinely miss working out here after graduation. Overall, a

New to gym, been coming here everyday for the past 2 weeks but today the guy at the front decided to give me an attitude and not let me in. Guess since my classes start in May (2 weeks) I can’t workout here? Already have gone to orientation and paid my dues, have my ID, I am fully a student here… I have been showing my course schedule on canvas to staff when I walk in and it hasn’t been a problem. Well today I show up at 8 AM, paid for parking already, and the guy gives me a hard time with a condescending attitude and makes me turn around and walk out. In front of multiple people too. Theres no need for that, I’m a student and you know it. Dumbest “rule” to exist and I guess only enforced by certain workers depending on their mood.

This gym is so bad. Why can’t we take off our shoes when stretching or doing abs? Can we invest in fans for the stairmaster machines instead of games to play? Why are half of the machines lopsided. Why when I do quad extensions is one leg getting more of an exercise than the other. Also why is the entire gym just extremely hot in general. Whenever I have a good workout I have to sit and wait for 15 minutes hut to cool down before going back outside in the Florida heat. Also if I get thirsty I can’t fill up my water bottle because the water tastes like actually sewer water.

I was overwhelmed at first because of how big and crowded it was, plus it was full of big, bulky, terrifying-looking guys 😂 But over time this has become my favorite place in the university. I mostly work out on the weight floor, but there are many other rooms for different kinds of sports. On the weight floor, you can find pretty much any thing for any kind of exercise. They're not new equipment, and from time to time things do get broken (they'll get fixed), but hey it's a free gym for students. Most folks here are students so the overall atmosphere is really nice and supportive. The "big guys" seem to prefer this over the other gyms on campus, so if u like watching ppl lifting heavy to get motivation, which I do, then come here. If u prefer a more chilling and relaxing atmosphere and newer equipment, go to the FIT or WELL. It can get really crowded tho, so pick the time carefully to avoid a lot of waiting.
