Very Disappointed With Academy Sports in Midland, TX I’m extremely disappointed with the customer service and lack of communication from Academy Sports in Midland. I ordered an air mattress to be delivered to my home on Tuesday, August 18th. Tuesday came and went, and the mattress was never delivered. My son even went to the store to see if he could pick it up instead. He was told that he could not pick up the order and that I would have to cancel it first, then he would have to purchase the mattress all over again. We decided not to do that because we were still expecting the original order to be delivered. Today, Thursday, August 20th, I called the Midland store to find out what happened. They told me they couldn't find my order and gave me a customer service number to call. When I called customer service, I was finally told that my order had been canceled. What really upsets me is that no one bothered to notify me that my order was canceled. I never received an email or any explanation, and I still have not received my refund. This was one of the most frustrating retail experiences I’ve ever had. We ordered a grill online from Academy as a Father’s Day gift, paid for it in full, received confirmation, and assumed everything was taken care of. Instead, Academy somehow managed to sell the grill out from under us after our order had already been placed and paid for. Because of their incompetence and poor inventory management, our Father’s Day plans were completely ruined. To make matters worse, they didn’t offer a meaningful solution—just a refund that now takes several days to return to our account. So not only did we lose the gift we planned and paid for, but we’re also left without access to our money while we wait for Academy to fix their mistake. How does a company take a customer’s payment for an item they supposedly have available, only to turn around and tell them it’s gone? This shouldn’t happen in 2026. If your inventory system is so inaccurate that you can’t fulfill orders you’ve already accepted payment for, then you shouldn’t be offering online ordering in the first place. I haven't been in Academy in years but because they are closest I went for some Rain Gear. After finally finding someone to ask because it wasn't clear where they put it, What I found was a total mess. Their stock variety was wiped out and it looked like a either a tornado the section. Very disappointed. No prices on anything. I saw 1 XL rain jacket hanging instead of in a package and it had a tear in it. Ended up going to Walmart and found exactly what I was looking for at $10 cheaper. I did get my fishing license there. It only took about 15 minutes.

Terrible in last 12.months I have paid multiple times for mispriced soccer items. They tried to charge me today $170.00 for a soccer ball for my son. I am making this post to be a historical marker for the future documentaries of the down fall of academy. This is where unhealthy capitalism found out.

I had an extremely frustrating experience at Academy Sports in Midland, TX. Yesterday I ordered a trampoline online and completed payment. The website clearly stated it would be ready for pickup within an hour. Based on that information, I drove to the store expecting a smooth pickup process. After arriving, I stood in line for approximately 30 minutes before finally getting assistance. When I reached the counter, I was told they did not actually have the trampoline in stock and that my order was being canceled. No prior notification. No phone call. No email. Nothing. To make matters worse, I was told that if I still wanted the same trampoline, I could drive to the Odessa location and purchase one there — but it would cost $100 more. So not only did they waste my time, but the “solution” was to pay more money and drive even farther. The manager came out and offered no real resolution. There was no attempt to honor the original price, no discount for the inconvenience, no meaningful apology — just a casual “sorry” and essentially “that’s just how it is.” If your inventory system can’t accurately reflect what’s in stock, don’t promise one-hour pickup. Customers plan their time a
