If you’re looking for a gym in Houston that gives you more than just workout equipment, check out the Trotter Family YMCA at 1331 Augusta Drive. I was surprised by how much they have in one place, especially for families. They have a full gym with cardio and strength equipment, group exercise classes, personal training, an outdoor pool, splash pad, whirlpool, steam room, outdoor track, gymnasium, tennis courts, racquetball courts and pickleball. They also offer aquatics programs, swim activities, wellness programs and programs specifically for adults 55 and older. One thing I think parents will REALLY appreciate is the Child Watch. You can actually bring your children and have them supervised while you work out instead of having to find someone to watch them. Their current Child Watch hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:15 AM to 1 PM and again from 4:15 PM to 7:45 PM, Friday from 8:15 AM to 1 PM and Saturday from 8:15 AM to 12:30 PM. They also have a lot for kids outside of Child Watch, including youth sports, camps, enrichment activities, teen programs and before and after school programs. Not only does the Y offer a wide variety of live instructor-led classes; they also have online classes that we take advantage of when we can't make it in person. Clean, fairly priced, excellent staff, and top-notch facilities.

I am energized from attending the classes and always feel welcomed. I go out of my way and drive a distance to attend this particular classes. Although there are classes all around me, this is the one that has the culture, community, welcoming spirit, top professional trainers, and caring, responsive, excellent staff.

This facility has the WORSE registration department I’ve EVER dealt with. My experience with them was 100% frustrating the entire time. I’m new to Houston and my 3 sons are coming here for the summer, so I started their paperwork back in the end of March to attend day camp while I work. I applied for financial assistance and didn’t get an answer back until May. After making countless calls I quickly noticed that I couldn’t get any real answers unless I took the time to come in person. Because the employees they have answering the phones just tell you anything and don’t really know what they’re talking about. Even got so bad I called and the lady just had me pay my membership fee and said it was towards my kids camp fee’s. That didn’t sound correct so I of course had to go in person to get real answers. May 22nd I came in to register my kids spent which took over an hour to do. Payed registration fee’s and upgraded my membership at the front counter. If someone from the child watch department wasn’t up front and witnessed me finalizing my paperwork they would have never told me I had to go to the other building to do more paperwork. This is a great neighborhood YMCA with a good variety of amenities and classes. One of the biggest highlights is the outdoor pool, which is heated during the winter and stays open year-round unless temperatures drop below freezing. The pool also has a 9-foot deep end and a few lap lanes. One downside is there’s very little shade around the pool area. Inside, there are free weights and cardio areas, basketball courts, TRX setup, and several group fitness rooms offering classes like yoga, pilates, Zumba, pickleball, and other fitness programs. The instructors and staff have always been very friendly and welcoming. The men’s and women’s locker rooms also include a steam sauna and hot tub, which are nice amenities. However, the steam saunas are frequently closed or broken for maintenance, so I’d recommend calling ahead to confirm what’s currently working before visiting. Another downside is that the lockers require you to bring your own lock—they do not have built-in combination locks like many newer gyms.
