Seems Coach Kent doesn’t welcome Asian women players in his class. Would suggest no male players consider other courts and clinics. ===== Update: I received an email from management, but instead of meaningfully addressing my concern, their response defended the coach and placed the blame on me as a player. I have received no apology. My issue was not simply being told to take a lower-level class. After class, I wanted to explain my situation and hear Kent’s advice. He patiently spoke with male players, but when I explained my situation, he said nothing. That silence left me feeling deeply embarrassed. If he felt the level was unsuitable, he could have explained why or offered guidance. In every other class I’ve taken here, coaches have patiently answered my questions before, during, and after class. This experience and management’s response was deeply disappointing.

This is a review for Rippner Tennis and the facility itself: I really enjoy taking classes here. The facility is nice and well taken care of; every employee I've encountered had been friendly and helpful, and as an advanced beginner, the coaches seem to be really solid. It has been a long time since I've played tennis consistently and I feel like the classes have helped me catch up really quickly. I give Rippner 4 stars because I wish the classes were a bit more affordable, at least for the semester program, and because I noticed that there were some courts with cracks that didn't have filler. I do not expect tennis facility built in the 1980s to be perfect, but cracks left unfilled can be a trip hazard. As for the pricing, perhaps this is unreasonable, but I would expect some sort of discount or benefit to paying for eight classes in advanced - maybe a free class or free session with the ball machine? $32 is far from ridiculous, so I do appreciate that — in fairness, most things be better if they were cheaper.

I had a private lesson with Tom after being away from the game for over a decade. He gave me tangible things to work on and concepts to consider while getting my game back. He handled it perfectly. Maybe his teaching style aligns with my learning style, but it was way more effective than just volleying for an hour and correcting bad shots.

They need to implement a system for giving feedback on coaches because while some of the long time coaches are amazing, others not so much. If you’re taking a clinic do yourself a favor and DON’T sign up with Dean… complete waste of money and time! He did not care about coaching the clinic properly and kept messing around with his feeds. Feeding facing backwards, feeding behind his back, feeding outside the court, and feeding to the middle of nowhere. He just laughed at how bad his feeds were and found it funny! Extremely low paced and low engagement for a higher level clinic, no feedback whatsoever. Some of his “approach shot” feeds were barely 2 inches past the net, and half of his “volley” feeds went straight from his racket to the net. No apologies or “bad feed” but no re-feeding either if you missed. That on top of a very slow pace, making players less and less engaged. As a long time customer it gets very frustrating that clinics are such a hit or miss with the new coaches!

Love this place—absolutely the nicest courts and best instructors / fun group classes in all of Austin. Pretty busy if you don’t reserve courts in advance, but classes can be booked pretty last minute. Great vibes from all the fellow players as well.
