Terrible customer service experience at the McKinney, TX location. (July, 7, 2026) I went to the store with my son to buy soccer gloves. He tried them on, and the shelf tag clearly showed $16.99. However, when checking out, the price scanned at $31.99. That is when the deeply uncomfortable situation began. Instead of simply going to the shelf to verify the discrepancy, the cash register employee and a staff member named Jeremias treated me with absolute distrust and judgment, completely ignoring my efforts to explain the situation in English. Jeremias kept insisting that another customer must have misplaced the item or that an employee just put it back in the wrong spot. But does it make any sense that an employee would put all of those adult gloves in the wrong place? The entire batch of adult gloves (sizes 8, 10) was stocked directly under the $16.99 Junior size label. I understand that retail stores are not legally obligated to honor pricing mistakes. However, this was a major organizational failure, not a minor typo or a single item left behind by a shopper. We went to Academy in McKinney TX to buy a barbeque pit. We were assisted by an employee who told us about the pit we were interested in. We told him that we had not decided yet and would be back the next day if we chose the pit. He asked us to ask for him that he could get us free shipping & delivery. We returned the next day to buy the pit, he then advised us that it would be $100 delivery fee due the weight of the pit. I stated well the freed delivery was one of the points for us deciding on buying the pit. After some thought we decided to pay the delivery fee, no wanting to mess with the weight of the pit and having to lift it. When the pit was delivered it was brought by a single delivery man in a white panel van, the pit was strapped in but was hanging out the rear of the van. The delivery man asked for help in off loading the pit. I told him that I paid for the pit to be delivered so I would not have to worry about lifting it due to my disabilities. Not wishing for him to hurt himself, I helped unload it. I was upset and contacted the McKinney Academy. The manager advised that they do not do deliveries and had to verify. I visited the store today with what I thought was a pretty crazy request- I needed 60 size 5 soccer balls with a variety of designs and wanted to pick them up immediately. Larry and Landon went above and beyond to help make it happen. They patiently searched through all the available stock, checked additional aisles throughout the store, and helped me review every option available so I could get the mix I needed. They were incredibly positive, helpful, and accommodating throughout the entire process. Not only did they help gather and organize everything, but they also made checkout quick and easy and even helped load everything into my car. They patiently waited while I coordinated to make sure we had exactly what was needed. Exceptional customer service from start to finish. I truly appreciate all of their help today and will definitely be back for any future sporting goods needs. Larry and Landon, thank you- you guys were fantastic!

After the passive-aggressive nihilism and advanced time-wasting techniques at Cabela’s, I figured I’d give Academy a shot instead. Not the biggest fishing selection on earth, but honestly a solid variety with enough gear choices to set you up for a good fishing trip without needing a second mortgage. And unlike the post-apocalyptic fishing aisles I saw here a year ago, the department was actually near fully stocked this time. Store was clean, organized, easy to navigate, and the staff was genuinely friendly. Dude at the checkout actually seemed like he enjoyed his job, which in retail these days feels rarer than a legendary Pokémon encounter. A refreshing break from the clown multiverse.

I recently had to return an item to Academy and the process could not have been easier. I brought it back in-store, and the staff was friendly, quick, and made the whole return stress-free. They pulled up my order with just my email confirmation, processed it right away, and refunded me to my original payment method without any hassle. I really appreciate how simple and customer-friendly Academy makes returns. Great experience overall!
